Fascination With All Things “Octo”
A while back I wrote an article about the lunacy of Octo-Mom and the whole process that ended in an unmarried mother of six having eight more children in a single shot. It still pains me to think of it…
The press (translation: public) fascination with her has not slowed a great deal. Updates are still regular news items.
- How many babies are NOW home (the hospital has been releasing them 2 at a time)
- The firing of the (free) home nursing service, for allegedly spying on her
- The $1 million offer for her to make a porn film
Well, now the latest. A large number of people at the hospital where the babies were born have resigned or been fired for accessing her medical records.
Why are random hospital personnel accessing her information?
Some have probably bragged about seeing the mom, or helping take care of the babies, or working close to where the babies are, or some-such…
Some of the employees are probably just nosy, and wanted to find out whatever they could about the mom and babies.
Some were probably goaded into it by friends or family. Gossip is a disease.
Maybe some were offered money by local reporters trying to get a ‘scoop.’
It doesn’t really matter what the motivation is. It is wrong. And they all knew it. This is part of a federal law called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act).
I guarantee you each employee has been a part of SEVERAL meetings, and countless warnings, about unauthorized accessing of peoples personal and private info.
Look, I think Octo-Mom is an idiot. I will not be moved from that position. But this is ridiculous. It doesn’t matter that she is famous. Her medical records, and your medical records, and my medical records, should be private. Period.
These people all deserve to be fired, and get no sympathy from me.
