Obama’s Environmental Planning

President-elect Barack Obama is currently planning to boost the economy by, among other things, pouring billions of dollars into a “more energy-efficient” economy. It times like these where a single thought runs through my head, over and over.

It’s about time.

This country has had numerous problems with the economy, excessive and egregious. This country, contrary to the actions of many other countries in the world and the U.N., has stepped backward from environmental regulation, instead giving big businesses what they want at the cost of everyone else. I need not remind you how well those big companies, like GM, have been doing recently.

The United States did not participate in the (Warning: Dangerously left-leaning link) Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which would have taken giant leaps forward in progressing this nation’s environmental standards. That is not the most shocking part, though. President-elect Obama plans on pouring money into environmental research. The shocking part is, even if this were to go into effect immediately – immediately – it would still put us a more than a decade behind every other nation that ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

At least it’s a step in the right direction.
