On May 4, 5 & 6 we ran a short series of articles by Evangeline McAllister. In the 1930’s she wrote for the Minatare (Nebr) Free Press, under the heading of “The Sage Hen.”

She was well-regarded as a poet, and frequently included poems in her weekly commentary articles. If you have not already done so, please go back and read those original articles to get acquainted with this very strong-willed woman.

Today we reprint another of her works, a poem titled…

“Ode to a ‘Tired Liberal’”

By Evangeline McAllister (Nov 4, 1937)

In youth he swore to rend the hindering bars
That held his people from the Promised Land –
Valiant to lead their army on
To victory and triumph in the stars.

Now cravenly he crouches in his shell,
Bowing the knee at each corrupt command,
Behind a simpering mask of fealty
To others’ gods and others’ hopes as well.

The tongue that would have trumpeted the call
To nobler living, nearer equity,
Now parrots forth smug utterings –
Strange sounds from One Who Would Be Free!

Traitor in age to spirit that is gone
From out the Youth who proudly bore his name –
So let us turn his picture to the wall,
Perhaps none will guess they are the same.
